The Facts: 22
million people in the U.S. have diabetes—but it gets worse—much worse: More
than one in every three babies born in the U.S. today will get diabetes in
their lifetime—and now many will get “adult-onset” diabetes as kids! We can—and must—change that! Diabetes
causes terrible misery—and much too often leads to long, miserable
dying. It can and does cause kidney
failure, blindness, amputations, heart disease, neuropathy . . . and
more. The numbers are
frightening—82,000 lower-limb amputations a year in the U.S., 44,000 new
cases of kidney failure, 12-22,000 new cases of blindness . . . . And those numbers will triple or quadruple
if we don’t stop the epidemic! The NY Times four-part series on diabetes in NYC was depressing
reading, but terrific writing; see it free here: 1, 2, 3, 4). The
prevalence of diabetes is increasing at an epidemic rate in the U.S. Diabetes is the only major disease for
which the death rate is rising! Diabetes
hurts everyone, but especially the families of diabetics. The epidemic
rise in incidence of diabetes in the U.S. comes from our failure to get into
training to race against it. Most
cases of diabetes can be prevented by very moderate weight loss. We can —and must—stop the epidemic! |

And a 2009 Tour of America: We
bike-raced the Race Across America (RAAM) from Oceanside CA to Atlantic City
NJ, in 2006 as a two-person team—to
get attention for our message about preventing diabetes. (We now hold the record for old mixed
two-person teams!) We met a lot of
great people! In 2007,
Patty raced the RAAM solo, just because she’s crazy enough to try it. She made it half-way, missed the time
cutoffs and packed it in to save her knees—but as the first 60+ year-old to
try it, she inspired a lot of women to start exercising. This
year, 2008, Patty and Terry raced Masters Track Nationals in San Jose. We’re becoming velodrome sprinters
now! (Terry says he swears off
long-distance racing now to save the nerves in his hands—just too many years
of diabetes for that, he says . . . .
The truth is, he’s just way better as a sprinter, so he’s talked Patty
into track racing with him . . . .) We finished the trip going up to Kalispell, Montana to exhibit
at Dr. Steve Edelman’s excellent “Taking Control of Your Diabetes” conference
there, and made a lot of new friends.
Montana’s beautiful (and the people there are too!) For
2009, Terry threatens a series of YouTube videos, including one with his
silly stories on how to lose weight.
We’ll also race Masters Track Nationals again, in Indianapolis this
time. We’re training with the famous
cycling coach Eddie B. to get fast!
(We love Eddie and his whole team! )
--Can we come to your town on our way home and meet everyone, and
encourage them to start training for the Race Against Diabetes? |

The Plan: Like it or not, we’re all in a race against diabetes—and we’re
tired of losing! There’s hope if we all get moving now! The Diabetes Prevention Program study
showed that most cases of diabetes can be prevented by very moderate weight
loss. For those who already have
diabetes, exercise and weight loss can reverse it, or at the very least
prevent or reduce its complications.
We can change the course of the epidemic—and the course of your
life! Join us and start training with
us to win the race against diabetes!
Form a family team and start now! We’re Terry Dutton and Patty Riddle—we’ve been a team for 33
years, and living with diabetes for a long, long time—40 years in Terry’s
case, and, in Patty’s case, 33 years of fighting Terry’s diabetes. We’re alarmed that no one is shouting from
the rooftops that an epidemic of diabetes is on its way—so we’re racing
across the country to spread the message that “Diabetes is coming! Diabetes is coming!” We need you to join our team!
We need you and your family and friends to get out and ride or
walk! Tell everyone you’re racing
against diabetes, form a family team, a friends team, a church
team, . . . whatever! Please click on “Join us and Race against Diabetes” to start
racing with us! Your new coaches and cheerleaders,
Terry and Patty P.S.: Please check out our pages on exercise, the importance of
family, and training tips. —And
please see our Coaches/Trainers page about free coaching advice. ___________________________________________________________ The Team: You! We want you to form your own family RAD team,
or a team of friends, and help each other train together like
athletes—exercise and eat smart. Join
us—pledge to form a team and train—and we’ll give you a free “I’m Racing
Against Diabetes” T-shirt. You’ll
help us get the message out! —For
